David is a very experienced disputes lawyer with a depth of expertise in insurance claims and coverage matters. He has an established track record in helping clients to resolve complex insurance and reinsurance disputes, both internationally and in the London market. He has been recognised by leading directories as an established expert in his field and as "an excellent litigator".

David has acted in many of fields of insurance business including property / business interruption, casualty, energy, mining, engineering/construction, political violence, Bermuda excess liability business, bankers' blanket bond, D&O, financial lines, EL/PL and credit insurance. He is well known for handling disputes connected with Latin America and the US and numerous other jurisdictions around the globe.

He also regularly advises on the drafting of policy wordings and clauses and on the impact of changes in insurance law.

David graduated in Law with French (BA Hons) from the University of Kent. On qualifying as a solicitor in 1989 he joined the reinsurance team at Barlow Lyde & Gilbert as an assistant solicitor gaining valuable early experience of reinsurance disputes, brokers' E&O and complex coverage issues.

He subsequently joined the London office of Eversheds where he became a partner in 2000, and some years later he was approached to become a partner in the insurance team at DLA Piper. In this period, he led on many major coverage disputes often arising from underlying losses in Latin America and the United States, he acted in relation to several major mining losses, worked on coverage issues arising from civil disturbances in Thailand, handled many run-off related disputes and advised on numerous aggregation and follow settlements related issues.

David gained experience of the Bermuda market when he later joined the London office of Sedgwick Detert Moran & Arnold where he acted for excess carriers on a number of major Bermuda form excess liability claims. Immediately prior to joining Carter Perry Bailey LLP in April 2026 David had been a partner at Elborne Mitchell where he continued his insurance / reinsurance coverage practice, advised on various insurance regulatory matters and acted in relation to a large investment treaty arbitration.

Litigation and Arbitration

David's dispute resolution experience includes litigation, arbitration and mediation, all often involving a significant international element. He has acted in ad hoc arbitrations, arbitrations under ARIAS (UK), ICC, LCIA rules and in Bermuda form arbitrations. He is very experienced in working with overseas lawyers to manage and strategize disputes in overseas jurisdictions.

Commercial and Regulatory

David advises on the drafting of insurance and reinsurance contract wordings and clauses, as well as other (re)insurance documentation such as underwriting guidelines, commutation agreements, claims protocols and agreements with service providers. He also advises on the impact of changes in insurance law and on various regulatory matters.
